Johns Hopkins Medical Team Performed The World's 1st Penis & Scrotum Transplant on War Veter

WASHINGTON (WJLA) - A Johns Hopkins medical team has performed the world's first penis and scrotum transplant on an injured war veteran.

Officials say the unidentified man, who was wounded while serving in Afghanistan, has recovered from surgery and is expected to be released from the hospital this week, according to a release from Johns Hopkins Medicine.

The 14-hour surgery was performed March 26 by nine plastic surgeons and two urological surgeons. Body parts used in the operation comprised of the entire penis, scrotum (minus the testicles) and part of the abdominal wall.

Surgeons transferred the organs from a deceased donor to the veteran in order to perform the operation which is called "vascularized composite allotransplantation," the release states. Additionally, the operation entails transplanting skin, muscles and tendons, nerves, bone and blood vessels.
