A Kentucky high school is secured and a suspect is in custody after a shooting Tuesday morning left one person dead and several people injured.
Around 8 a.m. CST, police responded to a shooting at Marshall County High School in southwestern Kentucky.
Kentucky State Police said later Tuesday morning that the scene was secured and a suspect was arrested. A Marshall County Sherrif's Deputy apprehended the shooter, KSP said in a tweet.
Two patients are being taken to Nashville to be treated at Vanderbilt University Medical Center campuses, according to the Tennessean.
Two Air Evac helicopters landed at the school to treat wounded, the Marshall County Tribune-Courier reported.
"Parents are being asked not to try and pick up students from Marshall County High School," the newspaper said. "We have been told there have been arguments between law enforcement and parents trying to get inside. The school remains on lockdown and no one is being allowed inside either entrance. Two Air Evac helicopters have landed in the past few minutes."
Students are going by bus to North Marshall and can be picked up there, according to local media outlets.
The FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are on scene at the high school, according to officials with both agencies.
Gov. Matt Bevin tweeted early Tuesday that a shooting had taken place.
"Tragic shooting at Marshall County HS...Shooter is in custody, one confirmed fatality, multiple others wounded...Much yet unknown...Please do not speculate or spread hearsay...Let’s let the first responders do their job and be grateful that they are there to do it for us..," Gov. Matt Bevin said in the tweet posted around 9: 45 a.m
The shooting was reported around 8 a.m. CST, according to Marshall County Emergency Management. The Marshall County Sheriff's Department told Courier Journal that it was responding to an incident there and they would release further information later. The high school is located in Benton, Kentucky, a few miles west of Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area. It's also about 120 miles northwest of Nashville, Tennessee. Marshall County High School is about 35 miles southeast of Heath High School in West Paducah, where on Dec. 1, 1997, 14-year-old Michael Carneal opened fire on a group of praying students, killing three and injuring five more. U.S. Rep. James Comer, a Monroe County Republican, also tweeted his concerns Tuesday morning. "My thoughts & prayers go out to the students & faculty at Marshall County High School where there has been a tragic school shooting," Comer tweeted.
