HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHP) - A U.S. Marshal was shot and killed while serving a warrant in Harrisburg, according to Harrisburg Mayor Eric Papenfuse.
Three officers were shot while serving a warrant around 6:30 a.m. on the 1800 block of Mulberry Street, the mayor explained.
The U.S. Marshal was killed in the shooting and two others, including a Harrisburg and York City police officer assigned to the U.S. Marshals Task Force, were injured. They were taken to the hospital where they are being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
According to the mayor, the Harrisburg officer assigned to the task force was able to shoot and critically injure the gunman.
“Harrisburg mourns the loss this morning of a U.S. Marshal who died protecting our residents. While serving a warrant as part of the U.S. Marshals task force, three officers were shot, including a Harrisburg police officer, who was wounded, bravely returned fire and critically injured the gunman," the mayor said in a statement.
"No words can adequately express the sadness we feel at this moment as we contemplate the loss of yet another law enforcement officer in the line of duty. I extend my sincerest condolences to the family of the slain U.S. Marshal, to his colleagues and to all law enforcement officers who risk their lives each day to protect and to serve our city and our nation.”
Officials said at a press conference the suspect is not at large, and there is no danger to the public at this time.
Right now, there is a person of interest in the case, however, officials are not identifying that person or releasing any information on his/her connection to the incident.
An investigation is underway and Harrisburg police are cooperating with federal and county law enforcement officials.
